AFCEA DC March Luncheon
5G Luncheon
Harnessing 5G to Augment Future Military Capabilities
The Department of Defense (DoD) has invested millions of dollars across twelve military bases over the last few years in a far-reaching effort to assess and deploy 5G applications that support its mission. To date, the department has successfully demonstrated a high-speed 5G network for smart warehouses, which will provide significant enhancements in the operation of autonomous vehicles for inventory management, machine learning for inventory tracking, and augmented/virtual reality applications for improved workforce efficiency in military warehouse and logistics operations.
Other projects are focused on experimentation and prototypes for spectrum sharing, base security and surveillance, advanced training and next-generation wireless capabilities to improve health care for U.S. service members wherever they may be across the globe and beyond. Going forward, projects will show the use of 5G in more tactical environments such as where a military 5G mobile network used by warfighters may be connected at times and disconnected at times from the broader public networks.
As DoD leaders continue their measured adoption of 5G across the defense enterprise, technical, policy, and cybersecurity challenges will need to be addressed for 5G to effectively speed up the transmission of vast amounts of data across multi-battle domains.
Join AFCEA DC on March 9, 2022, to hear DOD leaders discuss the latest lessons learned and insights from testbeds, as well as challenges the DoD must overcome to harness the power of 5G to augment future military capabilities, from command to the tactical edge.
