AI+ML Luncheon

Moving Toward the Digital, AI-enabled DoD Enterprise

The Defense Department is striving to become a digital and artificial intelligence-enabled enterprise capable of operating at the speed and scale necessary to preserve its military advantage, according to Pentagon officials. To that end, the Pentagon created a new position to lead its AI and machine learning (ML) efforts across the enterprise: Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAO). The CDAO will help synchronize AI efforts across the chief data officer, Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) and Defense Digital Service (DDS). The aim is to provide DoD with end-to-end cohesion from the time data is captured to when it's used for advanced analytics. The potential for AI/ML is evident in all battlefield domains as well as political, strategic, tactical and operational warfare. To date, the DoD and military services are engaged in more than 685 projects, ranging from unmanned systems to perfecting target recognition, according to the Government Accountability Office. For example, JAIC is working on a smart sensor to identify threats and relay footage to analysts.

What technical, policy, ethical and cultural issues do DoD leaders need to overcome to effectively harness data, data analytics, and AI for faster and better decision-making from command to the tactical edge?

Join AFCEA DC on June 15, 2022, to hear DOD leaders discuss AI/ML vision, progress and best practices that will give the DoD military advantage, from campaigning to conflict.
