AFCEA Washington, DC June Luncheon

Harnessing 5G for Military Operations

Fifth generation mobile networks, or 5G, promise low latency, high speeds and more reliable connectivity, presenting new possibilities for both the commercial sector and the military. Organizations, though, are looking to harness more than just faster broadband speeds from this next-gen technology. 5G can open doors to new capabilities in the areas of virtual reality, the Internet of Things, telemedicine and distance learning.  In fact, the Department of Defense has unveiled several 5G testbeds that have the potential to revolutionize how the government shares radio spectrum and trains service members. The DoD envisions three uses cases that will augment future military capabilities, including dynamic spectrum sharing to demonstrate the capability of 5G in congested environments, integration of augmented reality and virtual reality into mission planning and training, and smart warehouses to explore how 5G can simplify modern military logistics. Additionally, 5G will improve intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems and processing. Yet, leveraging 5G networks with software-centric and virtualized technologies for greater performance, can open these networks to more cybersecurity attacks and vulnerabilities.  Join AFCEA DC on June 3, virtually to hear government experts discuss the benefits, challenges and implications of deploying 5G networks to support military operations.

AFCEA DC will also be presenting the 2020 STEM Scholarship Winners. Each year AFCEA DC selects a few winners from a very deserving pool of high achieving students headed to college to study a STEM degree. We are proud to give back to our community each year, with the help of our AFCEA DC members and sponsoring organizations.
